When will doctors buy Apple Watch's AFib potential?

When will doctors buy Apple Watch's AFib potential?

Apple watches save lives. This has been proven time and time again.

Yesterday I told you about someone whose Apple Watch warned them about an AFIb situation they weren't already aware of. The notification that the wearer's heart rate was not what it should have saved his life. It is a very real situation. But one thing caught my attention - the doctors' response.

They laughed "at the Apple Watch, according to the story.

Emerg's doctors scoffed at the Apple Watch's ECG, saying it wasn't accurate enough to be used as a diagnostic tool. I replied that at least he had warned me to get medical help when without the watch I could have had a stroke.

It's not the first time we've heard this either. On several occasions, I have read stories involving medical professionals telling people that an Apple Watch is not able to read the readings necessary to correctly identify the potential for a heart problem. This as, apparently every month, we write the exact opposite. I can only imagine that there are plenty of other examples that also don't make the headlines.

Which begs the question - when will medical professionals accept Apple Watch and its ability to detect the potential for AF? Maybe they need someone to swing at their door with a watch strapped to their wrist while they are having a stroke. Hopefully not.

Equally concerning is the possibility of doctors telling people not to buy an Apple Watch when asked if it might be of benefit. At this point, we can all agree that wearing an Apple Watch means you're more likely to be alerted to atrial fibrillation than not wearing it at all. Surely that's all the information you need, right?

Now I understand. Doctors don't want thousands of people in their waiting rooms pretending their Apple Watch told them they were going to die. And that was a valid point when these features first came online. But I have yet to see the story of a hospital overrun because of Apple Watch's false positives.

Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
