Are you ready to get down to business? Samsung's new Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Note20 Ultra are enhancements to the Galaxy S20 lineup that add an S Pen stylus, fix some notorious camera issues, and connect better with your Windows 10 PC. From $ 999 for the Note20 and $ 1,299 for the Note20 Ultra, the phones will be pre-ordered on August 6 and hit shelves on August 21.
The Galaxy Note20 is available in two main models. There's a $ 999 Note20 that has a 6.7-inch, 1080p 60Hz display; 8 GB of RAM; 128 GB of storage; a 4300 mAh battery; and an array of cameras similar to the Galaxy S20 + with a 12MP main sensor, a 64MP telephoto lens that simulates a 3x zoom, a 12MP wide-angle sensor, and a 10MP front shooter.
Then there's the fully loaded Galaxy Note20 Ultra at $ 1,299. It has a screen of 6.9 inches, 2560 x 1440, 120 Hz; 12 GB of RAM; 128 GB or 512 GB of storage; a 4500 mAh battery; and a modified version of the Galaxy S20 Ultra's camera array, with a 108 MP main camera, a 12 MP, 5x optical zoom lens, a 12 MP wide-angle sensor and a 10 MP front lens.
Both run Android 10 on Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus chipsets, which are somewhat faster than the Galaxy S20's Snapdragon 865.
The phones look like Galaxy Notes, more square than the Galaxy S models, and this year with a prominent camera bump on the back.
“We wanted to develop a shape and shape unique to the Note [20] while making sure it still looks like the Note [series],” said senior Samsung designer Yunjin Kim. In her opinion, that means a "geometrically extruded" camera bump that echoes the shape and edges of the phone. The big bump is “to reveal the high performance aspect [of the camera] with confidence,” which might be true, but it might also just be necessary for the assembly of the camera.
The smaller Note20 is available in bronze, gray or green, while the Ultra is available in black, bronze or white.

"While the previous Note 10 showed the energetic aspect with an 'aura' color containing the principles of light and prism, [the] Note20 will emphasize comfort and subtle luxury with calm and neutral colors" , said designer Jung-Taek Lee.
There will be unlocked versions for all carriers, as well as individual carrier brand models in the United States.
The pen is the thing
The special thing about the Galaxy Note line is, and always has been, the S Pen.
The Note started out as a “big phone,” and a lot of people bought it because it was a big phone, but there are a lot of big phones out there these days. However, there are very few phones with styli that work well, and no other phone where the manufacturer has put as much thought into the stylus experience as you get here. That's why my wife and my daughter, both artists, have Notes: they wanted “the phone with the pen”.

The new S Pen upgrade starts with lower latency. I've never had a big issue with S Pen latency, but Samsung reduced it this year from around 40ms to 9ms on the Note20 Ultra and around 18ms on the Note20. (Samsung didn't give an exact figure for the Note20's normal latency, but said the reduction was in half compared to the Ultra.) So now the Ultra's S Pen latency is the last one. Apple pencil, which is also 9 msec when used with the iPad Pro line.

The difference in pen latency, I'm pretty sure, is related to the screen refresh rates of the two phones. The Note20 Ultra has a 120Hz screen, which means it refreshes every 8.3 milliseconds. A pen latency of 9ms is roughly at the limit of visibility on this screen. The Note20 has a 60Hz screen, refreshing every 16.6 milliseconds. So a latency of 18-20ms is also pretty close to the refresh rate of this screen.
There is fairly widespread support for the S Pen's pressure sensitivity in common applications. Samsung continues to push its Samsung Notes app anyway, improving it this time around with some really useful features. It now syncs with OneNote, annotates PDF files, and has a folder structure to help you organize your notes better. My daughter has been using Samsung Notes as a drawing app for a few years now because it's so easy. Syncing with Microsoft's cloud means it will be much more useful across multiple platforms.

Fixing the Camera
The camera of the Samsung Galaxy 20 Ultra is having problems. Phase-detection autofocus on its 108-megapixel sensor is slower than dual-pixel autofocus on other phones, and in its early life the Ultra also had issues with accuracy. The Galaxy S20 Ultra's "100x" zoom, on the other hand, is an almost unusable gimmick.
The Note20 Ultra starts off with the Galaxy S20 Ultra's camera array, but makes some critical changes. It adds a laser autofocus module, which should fix autofocus issues, and Samsung is only promising a 50x zoom here. In my experience, zooming over 30x on this camera system is like looking at an impressionist painting, but it's nice to see Samsung stray from that 100x promise.
The smaller Galaxy Note20 uses the S20 + camera system, which didn't have the autofocus issues; Samsung suggests a 30x zoom, which appears to be made up of 3x optical and 10x digital.
Beyond the necessary fixes, Samsung is focusing more on video than stills from cameras here.
“The Note20 series cameras have been developed with video shooting enhancements as the primary focus,” said Sarah Ahn of Samsung. "Consumers are watching and filming a lot more videos than in the past. This phenomenon is more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic."
The camera now has 8K and 21: 9 recording at 24 frames per second, and its professional video mode lets you do a bunch of audio tricks with the phone's three mics. You can turn the mics on and off to focus your audio recording in a directional fashion, change the audio input level in real time, or use Samsung's Galaxy Buds Live as a remote microphone.
The Note20 Ultra also records at 120 fps to match its 120 fps screen, Ahn said.
Phone to PC
Samsung is not Apple. But at least here in the United States, Apple is mostly up against who it is. This means fighting against Apple's powerful integration between its phones, tablets and PCs. Samsung has taken a two-pronged approach: expanding its partnership with Microsoft and continuing to improve its DeX PC-like mode. It's very Samsung, and very Android, of course. Why have one solution when you can have two?

DeX, meanwhile, moves a bit more into screencasting and presentations from its initial launch to turning your phone into a PC. DeX now works with Miracast, Qualcomm's popular streaming system, to stream from your phone in PC mode to TVs.

Keeping an eye on 5G
Both Galaxy Note20 models will support "a full 5G experience," according to Samsung, with access to 5G millimeter wave and sub-6 networks. This currently sets the S20 apart from other 5G phones. On AT&T and T-Mobile, the S20 is the only phone that takes advantage of these carriers' millimeter wave networks, where they are available.
That said, US carriers are still in danger of messing up. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a version for US carriers only, sub-6 only, or a version exclusive to Verizon, or something else that keeps the state of 5G fragmented and confused.
The phones come with Qualcomm's current X55 modem, which is pretty well configured for what will happen with US 5G networks over the next year. It works on all groups that they currently plan to use with 5G next year, including new technologies like autonomy and DSS. (AT & T's next standalone network may require next year's modem, the X60.)
With Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 and the usual range of wireless technologies, these are the first Samsung phones to support ultra broadband, a new wireless standard that we have also seen in the Apple iPhone series. 11. Like on the iPhone 11, I don't really understand why you need a new chip here, but maybe they're cheap.
The chip allows better detection of the proximity and position of the phones, which allows a point-to-share function where you can save files on each other's phones. Samsung also promises a “digital key” feature to allow your phone to function as a key to a smart lock in your home or office. Again, I don't understand why this all requires another chip or how many people will be using these features, but they are there.

What the S20 should have been
The Note range is always a second chance for Samsung. This allows the company to take this year's Galaxy S innovations, refine them, and add the S Pen. This year the stakes are higher than usual due to the issues with the S20 Ultra's camera. The Note20 Ultra isn't just cheaper than the S20 Ultra (by $ 200), it hopefully has a 108-megapixel camera that focuses well.
Samsung is also positioning the Note series as the Windows alternative to Apple's iPhone-Mac integration. With a lot of Windows PCs, it's a smart decision, if it works.
We'll be taking a closer look at the new Note20 units very soon, and we'll have reviews ready as their August 21 release date approaches, so check back soon.
